The police arrested two protesters of climate change on Monday after they destroyed a glass panel that was protecting a celebrated Diego Velázquez oil painting at London's National Gallery.

The two members of Just Stop Oil used small hammers to attack Velázquez's painting, popularly known as "The Rokeby Venus" or "The Toilet of Venus," leaving behind several holes in the protective glass panel.

Just Stop Oil, the organization behind prior protests that focused on iconic artworks and public buildings, announced on Monday that the demonstration was to call on the British government to immediately suspend all granting of permits for the search, growth and production of fossil fuels in the U.K.

On Monday, the group declared that the two activists had selected Velázquez's well-known 17th-century painting, a masterpiece of the Spanish artist, for their action, due to its prior slashing by the suffragettes in 1914 as part of their struggle for women's rights.

The protesters from 'Just Stop Oil' pounded the glass panel, imploring the people at the gallery:

“Women did not get the vote by voting. It is time for deeds, not words." “Politics is failing us. It failed women in 1914 and it is failing us now.” They added.

The National Gallery has taken the painting off exhibit in order for conservators to inspect it.

The police announced that they arrested a large number of Just Stop Oil protesters who had engaged in 'slow marching’ in central London's Whitehall on Monday as part of their campaign of civil disobedience.

Just Stop Oil is part of a wave of youthful direct-action protest groups worldwide, with support from the U.S.- based Climate Emergency Fund, established for the purpose of backing environmental protests.

During July, British government officials granted the police additional authority to pursue activists obstructing traffic and to break up stationary protests.
